The
Ampara Water Sourcing Project will provide water infrastructure
for families that were affected by the 2004 tsunami. Because of
the critical nature of the water needs in the target communities,
ADRA Sri Lanka will provide the communities with drinking water
through water trucking in the early stages of the project while
developing more permanent water infrastructure. The project will
build on the successes of ADRA’s water projects in southern
Sri Lanka since the Tsunami to provide the water infrastructure
require for communities in Pottuvil, Arugam Bay, Komari, Panama,
and Lahugala.
Project
beneficiaries include communities living in areas that have been
directly affected by the tsunami as well as areas where relocated
survivors of the tsunami have been accommodated in housing schemes
built by other local and international NGOs.
ADRA
Sri Lanka is still in the initial stages of the project since
its approval in August 2006. In this initial stage, ADRA is networking
with various levels of government and other NGOs working in the
area in order to ensure the success of a sustainable water program.
In addition to bringing clean and safe water to target communities,
it is ADRA Sri Lanka’s goal that the Ampara Water Sourcing
Project will bring about sustainable community development that
will empower communities to face the challenges ahead of them
in the areas of water and sanitation.
