In
the Hambantota District, the largest province in Sri Lanka, ADRA
has been providing emergency solutions to potable drinking water
since the Tsunami, and currently continues to empower the communities
to be able to stand on their own, and to provide safe drinking water
for themselves.
Project Goal
The goal of Hambantota Water Supply Project (HWSP) is to provide
a steady safe drinking water supply to both directly and indirectly
Tsunami affected families in the Division of Agunakolapelessa in
Hambantota District. HWSP seeks to prevent the incidence of water-related
illnesses amongst displaced and relocated households by providing
access to safe drinking water, and at the same time, it aims to
provide the necessary tools and training for the 2000 beneficiary
families in order to achieve this goal. Project
Summary
Angunakolapelessa
is the poorest division in the Hambantota District, with an estimate
of 11,000 resident families, who according to the Divisional Secretariat,
have very poor access to drinking water, drinking water that is
un-suitable for human consumption, potentially causing diseases
such as yellow fever and diarrhoea to arise amongst the local
population.
After
the Tsunami, the post-tsunami migration phenomenon, added to the
already existing poor drinking water supply, has led the Angunakolapalessa
Divisional Secretariat to make an explicit request to ADRA to
help resolve the lack proper storage facilities and safe drinking
water supply in the area, in order to reduce the effects that
this situation has upon the general health of a community that
is comprised of both directly and indirectly Tsunami affected
families.
The
Angunakolapalessa Divisional Secretariat government office has
been a witness of the success of HEWAP I, (ADRA’s initial
emergency water storage and distribution project in the Hambantota
District) which benefited 15.000 families, and as a result of
this, the Divisional Secretary has requested that ADRA provide
the same service to the local community of Angunakolapalessa.
The requested support includes the instalment of Water Disinfection
Units, water tanks, support for water distribution activities,
and capacity building for these activities to be carried out the
community itself.
Below is a summary of the project:
•
The project will be implemented in the relocated and host communities
of Angunakolapelessa,
• Four (4) Water Purification Units will be installed. Each
Water Purification Unit is capable of producing up to 50.000 litres
of drinking water a day
• 200 – 1000 litre water tanks will be installed to
provide drinking water for 2000 families. Each tank has the capacity
to provide water for 10 families.
• 2000 families, at least 10,000 beneficiaries will have
access to a steady safe drinking water supply for an initial period
of 6 months.
• Health education, responsible water use training and capacity
building for water supply coordination are scheduled to be held
in the different beneficiary communities in order to have them
empowered to provide safe drinking water for themselves at the
end of the project.
