Tsunami Recovery in Ampara and Trincomalee
(TRAT)

Due to a range of relief and construction projects, the Pottuvil community has undergone significant recovery since the 2004 Tsunami.  With help from donors, there are more than one thousand new homes and several reconstructed post-tsunami communities.  There are new schools, health centers, community centers and government buildings.  There is an ongoing large scale infrastructure projects including: rural and regional road network, an electricity plant and a water treatment plant done by government and various humanitarian agency.

Despite the influx of funding and construction in the areas; there are still gaps in sanitation facilities and infrastructure rehabilitation.  There is still a strong need for awareness in the areas of hygiene, sanitation and environmental practices.

ADRA is improving the quality of water, expanding the water sources through-out the communities and strengthening community based management of water sources. Sanitation facilities are now becoming more accessible to Tsunami affected families.  Education in hygiene, sanitation and environmental practices is strongly contributing to positive behavior changes to the mindset of the beneficiaries.
